Strange Fruit 最初是紐約 Bronx 地區的一位猶太裔中學教師 Abel Meeropol 所寫的詩，1936年發表於 The New York Teacher 雜誌，詩的內容是在控訴美國歧視黑人的種族主義，以及在南方普遍存在對黑奴施以私刑的殘忍現象。

Abel Meeropol 曾試著找人將這首詩譜成歌，但後來還是自己寫。譜成歌後，他和太太，以及另一位黑人歌手 Laura Duncan 都曾在紐約各地現場演唱這首歌曲，包括麥迪遜花園廣場，使得這首歌成為當時頗受矚目的抗議歌曲。

1939年 Billie Holiday 經人介紹得知此歌曲，開始在 Cafe Society (俱樂部) 演唱此曲。後來她向所屬的 Columbia 唱片公司表示想灌錄此曲，但唱片公司反對，怕南方的代理商會反彈。Holiday 只好找好友 Milt Gabler 洽談，他經營一家小型獨立唱片公司 Commodore，Holiday 清唱給他聽，他大受感動。後來 Columbia 唱片公司同意 Holiday 在仍有合約的狀況下，短期轉赴 Commodore 公司灌錄發行歌曲。

Strange Fruit 終在1939年發行單曲，僅是 B-side 曲，推出後卻大受歡迎銷售極佳，成為 Billie Holiday 的經典代表作之一。雖然成為代表作，雖然在現場表演時常常演唱此曲，Holiday 的長期合作伙伴 - 鋼琴手 Bobby Tucke - 卻表示 Holiday 幾乎每次唱完此曲都會崩潰。

浅川マキ (Asakawa Maki) 是位 Jazz/Blues 女歌手，她於60年代便在 Club 演唱，被寺山修司 (電影導演/舞台劇導演/詩人/做詞人) 發掘，於60年代末期發過幾張單曲，後來於1970年發行首張專輯「浅川マキの世界」正式出道。浅川マキ的歌聲有磁性又迷人，好聽極了！

她翻唱這首 Strange Fruit，除了招牌迷人歌聲之外，前頭一大段精彩的爵士鋼琴獨奏更是動人，演奏者是日本爵士樂界著名的大人物山下洋輔。
