山下勉 (Stomu Yamash'ta) 1947年生於日本京都，曾在京都大學、Juilliard School of Music、Berklee College of Music 學習音樂。

60年代末期，山下勉已是有名的樂手 (percussion & keyboard)、創作人、製作人，其音樂類型廣泛，包含 rock、fusion、jazz、electronic、現代音樂、電影配樂、舞台劇配樂、芭蕾舞劇配樂等。他也若干次領導製作融合音樂、舞台表演... 等多面向的藝術呈現計畫，真是位多采多姿的音樂人。

70年代初期山下勉赴歐洲發展，先短暫於法國待一陣子，後來轉赴英國後定下來，爾後他於70年代發行的專輯多半在英國錄製。山下勉才氣縱橫，於歐發展期間很快嶄露頭角獲致名聲，與很多名人合作過：例如譜寫電影配樂有 David Bowie 的 The Man Who Fell to Earth 以及 Ken Russell 的 The Devils；也曾以樂手身份參與管弦樂團 Chicago Chamber Orchestra 及搖滾樂團 Come to The Edge 的巡迴演出。

隨著各專輯屢獲好評，山下勉的名聲更佳提升。70年代中期，他號召更多好手組成融合 rock/jazz/fusion 的超級團體 GO，其他成員... 請回頭看看上面那堆 line-up 出現哪些名字吧，光是 Steve Winwood、Klaus Schulze、Al Di Meola 三人就嚇死人了，他們都應邀合作，由此可見山下勉當時的影響力。

GO 共發過兩張錄音室專輯及一套 Live。在這些作品中，他們有時不知所云，有時嫌無味，但很多時候又精彩無比，典型的 fusion，緊湊火熱毫無冷場。他們也有意外的驚喜，如 GO 專輯一開始電得很，以為會是 Klaus Schulze 那套，過陣子鋼琴及雙簧管進來，氣氛變得抒情，後來中板鼓節奏、管弦樂、Steve Winwood 的歌聲加入，哇塞，徹底動人感傷的曲子，都忘了這是一堆大咖打著實驗旗幟的融合前衛專輯。

GO 這三張專輯在2005年集合在一起，以兩張CD的形式，發了套完整的 The Go Sessions。

1980年山下勉宣布退休，離開歐洲回到京都，在京都一家寺院潛修，不知他想獲得什麼心靈之成長。總之他也沒退休很久，靈修完後又復出繼續發行專輯，據說樂風偏向更空靈的 space music，但他80年以後的作品我都沒聽過，光聽他70年代的幾張專輯已經夠精彩，令人回味無窮。
