There is a saying: clothing is the extension of skins, and house is the extension of limbs. In Chinese and Taiwanese architectures, house is not only the extension of limbs, but also the extension of spirits.
Three-section compound is the typical form of Taiwanese houses which consists of a central building with two wings attached perpendicular to either side. The three sections form into a shape like a person stretches out his arms. There will be a front yard hugged by the three sections and lined by a straight front wall with a front gate.
The central building is called "main body" which consists three or five series connected rooms. Roof of the central room is higher than those of side rooms. This demonstrates the central room is superior than other rooms. The central room is used to worship ancestors, and also the living room for the family. The side rooms are bedrooms for elder members of the family. The closer for the elder, then the left for the elder. The sequence of combination reveals the traditional concept of orders between the elder and the younger.
The two wings are called "left guardian dragon" and "right guardian dragon". They consists of bedrooms for the younger, kitchen, storage rooms, etc. According to the same concept, the younger members live in the rooms furthur to the central building. And sometimes the rooms in the left wing are bigger than the ones in the right wing.
All the rooms face the yard. The family members have many chances to meet each other after leaving the bedrooms. It helps to improving harmonic feelings between family members.
All the family members will carry out various activities together in the center room of the central building: to worship for their ancestors, certain ceremonies, or some general family affairs. This makes everyone to form the strong sense of a union.
